Existing Site

The site was originally an underused, former bowling green. As it was sunken below the surrounding pathways, the ground needed to be elevated to create a level, accessible space that integrates seamlessly with the existing landscape.

Design

The Churchfields Splash Pad is a bespoke, inclusive water play area thoughtfully designed to cater to visitors of all ages and abilities. The layout encourages fluid movement through three distinct play zonesToddler, Interactive, and Junior—each offering unique features that balance excitement with accessibility.

Key interactive elements include the Water Arch, Aqua Tent, Flying Frisbee, Super Soaker, and a variety of inground jets like the Peacock, Sea Squirt, and Fountain Burst, all arranged within a vibrant wetpour surface that supports imaginative and sensory play. The splash pad integrates Tap Tap Activators at varying heights for inclusive use, and interactive play panels for dry play experiences.

Family-friendly design is reinforced with ample seating, picnic areas, and intuitive pathways that ensure easy navigation and safe transitions between play zones.

Sustainability is a core principle of the design. The splash pad operates on a recirculation system, where water is treated, filtered, and reused, significantly reducing water consumption. To further minimize environmental impact, solar panels are integrated to help power the plant system, aligning with the council’s commitment to sustainable infrastructure.

All equipment is part of the UK-manufactured ECOSPLASH range, using low-flow nozzles and customizable features to optimize water use while delivering high play value. Every element—from efficient spray sequencing managed by the Dynamic Sequence Controller to recyclable HDPE play panels—has been chosen to create a sustainable, safe, and engaging destination for the whole community.

Construction Phase

During the construction of the Churchfields Recreation Ground Splash Pad, we transformed an underused former bowling green into a vibrant water play area. The site required significant ground-raising to meet the surrounding pathways. We re-used the existing building for the plant room, adding a new double-door entrance to improve access. The design included a recirculating water system with a filtration and automatic treatment setup, adhering to PWTAG guidelines. As sustainability was a key consideration, we also integrated solar panels to help power the system.

A detailed construction sequence was implemented, beginning with the site compound setup, fencing, and traffic management to ensure public safety and minimal disruption. Key stages included excavation, installation of anchor points, pipework, and tanks, followed by a continuous concrete pour to form a watertight basin. A wet pour safety surface and AstroTurf perimeter were then installed, along with interactive splash features. Site welfare units were provided, and all staff underwent site inductions with a focus on health, safety, and public courtesy.

Throughout the build, we maintained a strong focus on sustainability and waste reduction, using only precise material quantities and segregating reusable and recyclable waste. All construction was supported by a comprehensive set of RAMs, a traffic management plan, and health and safety documentation. Once completed, we conducted commissioning, staff training, and a detailed EN 1176 and EN 1177 inspection to ensure safety and compliance. The site was then fully reinstated, ready for public enjoyment.

Post-Completion & Safety Inspection

Upon completion, we conducted a thorough independent play inspection to identify and address any potential safety risks and ensure the area conforms to EN 1176/77 Playground standards.
